Historic Preservation Committee Deadline Reminders

Historic Preservation is in the air! Yes, it’s Fall and along with those leaves swirling around, there are also many DAR deadlines. Please don’t forget deadlines related to the Historic Preservation Grants and the Historic Preservation Project Contest Award.

The DAR Historic Preservation Grants provide financial support for local community projects that preserve historic resources, sites and other history-related projects. Examples include restoration of historic buildings; digitization or preservation of documents/records; preservation of historical items/artifacts; erection of new or rededication/relocation of existing historical markers; cemetery headstone and monument conservation, etc. Additional consideration is provided to projects related to the Colonial-through-the-Federal periods, though projects from all eras are welcome to apply. Funding will not be approved for State Regent Projects. In addition, due to increased economic challenges faced by community not-for-profits, other lineage societies are no longer eligible for these grants.

Please note that completed applications must be postmarked on or before December 31 and mailed by USPS or other mail carrier to the DAR Historic Preservation Grants Vice Chair Carol Felson at the address listed on the Instruction Sheet. Please note the other restrictions detailed in these forms.

The purpose of the Historic Preservation Project Contest Award is to recognize and honor an NSDAR chapter or state society that has completed an outstanding project in historic preservation. Projects could involve preserving a historic site, landmark, historic district, or property, all of which may be publicly, privately, or DAR-owned. The project must be sponsored by an NSDAR chapter or state society and have been completed in the last two years.

The Historic Preservation Project Contest is administered by the national vice chairman.  States must have non-DAR Judges determine state winners and the State Organization may present state level awards. After being judged, states send their first-place winners to the Division Vice Chair by February 15.  Non-DAR judges are also used at the division level. Division first place winners are forwarded to Sue Simpson, National Vice Chair by April 15.  Division-level winners are given certificates by their respective division chairs. National first, second, and third place chapter and state society winners are determined by non-DAR judges and certificates are presented at Continental Congress each year.  

Directions and application forms can be found in the Forms section of the DAR members' website. States set their own deadlines, however there are specific deadlines for submission to the Division Vice Chairs and to the National Vice Chair. Please be aware of those. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to share your chapter or state Historic Preservation Projects and have them considered for this award!
