Live Virtual Tours of the DAR Museum

Katie Cannon, DAR Museum Curator of Education

The pandemic has forced us all to reimagine how we do things, and the DAR Museum is no different. Since we cannot currently welcome visitors into the physical museum space, we have had to go virtual… and the result is the surprising benefit that we can now invite visitors on real-time museum tours from all over the country, and even around the world!

For the past few months, the DAR Museum has been offering regular “live virtual tours” of the museum. Hosted on the Zoom Webinar platform, these tours are given by a museum educator. Viewers can watch the tour from their home computers and interact with the educator by typing in questions or comments.

There are currently two tours available, with plans to expand the offerings over time. Each one lasts about 30-40 minutes. Privacy in the Early American Home gives you a taste of home life in the early days of the United States; you will see how shifting ideas about privacy changed the overall look of the home, and which activities took place where. Women at Home in Early America is an exploration of the different roles of women in the 1700s, 1800s, and early 1900s; some of them may not be what you expect!

Our museum guests tune in “from sea to shining sea” in the U.S.A., and so far, we have welcomed viewers from Canada and the United Kingdom as well! These tours have been popular with an average of 20 – 30 guests on each tour, although some have had as many as 60. This is many times the number of people we can take on a tour in the physical museum building; if you have been to Memorial Continental Hall you will remember the cozy halls and narrow doorways that cannot accommodate more than a few people at once.

We are delighted to expand the museum’s accessibility to anyone, in any location, who wants to view our collection on a live tour with a museum educator. If you would like to join the next tour, you can see the current offerings here. Tours are free and scheduled 1-2 weeks in advance, so if none of the times suit your schedule, check back later until you see one that does.

We hope to see you on the next tour!
