A Box of Sunshine

Diane Waugh Oliver, National Chair, Community Classroom Committee

It’s officially August and the coronavirus has continued to affect every part of our world.  Some schools have reopened while others are trying to decide what is best for all – the students, staff, teachers, and administrators.

In the midst of the unknown, there are still children who need to be educated and teachers who need our support.  In a typical year, teachers spend, on average, $450 out of their own pockets on supplies for students.  To help reduce the back to school costs that families may be experiencing at this time, the Community Classroom Committee team has created “A Box of Sunshine” project to help offset the needs of students everywhere.

A Box of Sunshine” is filled with helpful tools which will help a student learn – whether school is in session now, next month or via virtual instruction.   This project can be carried out by chapter members quite easily.  It doesn’t matter if a chapter is able to fill one box or 25 boxes, every contribution will make a difference.

Grade-specific items to be included in each “Box of Sunshine” are noted on the PowerPoint that is located on our committee website. Posts will appear on the Community Classroom’s private Facebook group, NSDAR Community Classroom, as well.  The identifying sticker can be easily created via an Avery template or simply copied and printed for use on each box.

Please submit your Success Story and a photo of all your contributions and “Boxes of Sunshine” via your state chair.   The following link will take you to the Success Story Form.

Innovative and creative lesson plans can be found on our website, as well.  Currently, there are more than 60 lessons that teachers of all levels can use to supplement their tool box of information.   Nan Jones and her team of reviewers are doing an amazing job in encouraging teachers everywhere to submit lesson plans.  The necessary cover page and lesson plan template forms can be readily accessed on our website.  The Educational Resources team continues to meet monthly and looks forward to receiving and approving more lesson plans.  Please reach out to Nan, National Vice Chair of Educational Resources, at [email protected] if you need further information.

Daughters, be someone’s sunshine and create a “Box of Sunshine” for students in your community!
