I write with a request that you join me in seeking positive, uplifting ways to be beacons of hope for our fellow citizens – in finding ways that we, as Daughters, can demonstrate that there is more that unites us than divides as Americans. The pandemic, civil unrest and economic turmoil have depressed our American spirit in ways that profoundly sadden me. But we must remember that we, as DAR members, continue a promise to our ancestors and our posterity to celebrate the blessings of liberty for all Americans – and to evidence our love of country through continued patriotic purpose. Will you join me in spreading sunshine during these dark days?
Our National Society was founded on October 11, 1890, during a time that was marked by a revival in patriotism and historical interest. The objectives laid forth in the first meeting of the DAR have remained constant through the decades -- and represent exactly what our nation needs today: Historical - to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American Independence; Educational - to carry out the injunction of Washington in his farewell address to the American people, "to promote, as an object of primary importance, institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge, thus developing an enlightened public opinion…"; and Patriotic - to cherish, maintain, and extend the institutions of American freedom, to foster true patriotism and love of country, and to aid in securing for mankind all the blessings of liberty.
I believe that our timeless mission propels us forward to identify ways to help heal our nation; we must, however, challenge ourselves to find new opportunities to do so. Our recent mask-making effort is a wonderful example, with nearly 600,000 pieces of Personal Protective Equipment created. With many schools not returning to traditional classrooms, essay contests and Community Classroom efforts may be more difficult to arrange; however, homeschooling may offer new ways to engage with your local students. Plant a “Sunshine” pollinator garden or complete a waterway cleanup. Support our DAR Project Patriot Committee efforts to aid our men and women in uniform, as well as those of the Flag of the United States of America, Constitution Week and many other committees in your local community. Many chapters have embraced virtual platforms to continue our mission. Please find ways to BE the sunshine wherever you serve.
