Wrapping up the 129th Congress, Looking Ahead to the 130th!

Denise Doring VanBuren, President General

I once again thank the outstanding Congress team that created our virtual 129th Continental Congress last month. This week, we met via video conference to debrief and review survey results in order to identify ways to make future Congresses even better….and by the way, we certainly hope and plan to be back in Washington, D.C., at our national headquarters in person for the 130th Continental Congress, June 30 – July 4, 2021. So, plan now to join us!

Please allow me to also thank those of you who took time to send notes, emails and social media posts about our Virtual Congress.  In particular, let me recognize the nearly 2,000 members who completed the post-Congress Survey. Your feedback is important to knowing what you thought we did well -- and where we can improve in the future.

While we hope that everything will be back to normal for next year’s Congress and that we won’t need to again employ virtual platforms, we certainly see an opportunity to identify positive experiences from our first Virtual Congress that we can incorporate into future in-person Congresses.

Here is an overview of findings from this year’s survey:

  • In all, 2,106 members completed the survey. This number is only slightly more than our typical number of responses. However, a larger quantity of responses this year came from members who were experiencing their first Congress – a positive development, as many expressed an interest of now attending in person.
  • Overall, members viewed their Virtual Congress experiences positively. Members enjoyed viewing both the Society’s sessions and various committee/member-run events. 95% of members said they were very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with this year’s Congress programming
  • A good deal of constructive feedback focused on the execution of various virtual social events. I am proud of our various states, committees, clubs and other event organizers who hosted virtual events on such short notice. We all learned as we went, creating the models/platforms that we did as volunteers to the best of our abilities. We learned what worked well and what can be done better in the future should we need to, with a future goal of providing more consistency/ease of use for members. Thank you, everyone, – hosts and participants – for learning together in a grand experiment of virtual gathering!
  • Members who used the new credentialing and pre-registration gave it positive reviews and many urged us to find more ways that they could complete forms and pay electronically – which we are investigating.
  • Electronic voting was a huge success, with 92% of members reporting that they found it very convenient.
  • In other survey comments, members reported that they learned new and valuable information, such as ideas for service initiatives, the importance of incorporating technology and tips to recruit/maintain members.

Members also reported that they appreciated being able to watch the video programming any time – even after it was presented live. Please note that these Virtual Congress sessions are still available for viewing and can be used as chapter programming. While I am so very grateful that members joined us for these events real time and in replay, please know that we have been live streaming in-person Congress sessions and evening ceremonies for 15 years. Members everywhere can watch the sessions at home live or any time after they aired live. Here are some examples from previous Congresses (Congress 2019 and Congress 2018).

We will continue to present video live streams of the Congress ceremonies and business sessions in the future for those members unable to travel to DC; now I hope that many more of you will take advantage of this live stream and tune in online even if you can’t attend in person. (Although, I believe the majority will agree with me: attending in person is a much more thrilling and powerful experience!)

In addition to the survey results, we learned a great deal from the data we collected from website statistics and those resulting from the “Reflecting on Continental Congress” follow-up blast email sent to all members with an email on file (the represents approximately 145,000 of you; if you don’t have your current email on file in eMembership, make sure to have it updated so that you receive important email communications from National Headquarters).

One thing we know for sure: the online Congress afforded us the largest audience ever in the history of our National Society. As of this writing, the Opening Night Session has 24,774 views; Thursday night Education Awards and Executive Reports Night has 13,280 views; Friday night State Regents Night has 12,518 views; Saturday daytime Business Session has 8,422 views; Saturday night National Defense Night has 9,109 views; and Sunday Memorial Service and Installation has 6,796 views. Remember: you can watch these sessions at any time – and they make a great program in this era of virtual chapter meetings.

Based upon views, the most popular events beyond the official sessions were the Registrar General’s Forums: Non-Military Sources for RW Patriots, DAR & DNA Outreach and How to Establish Residence & Its Importance During the American Revolution; the DAR Library’s Preserving Family Treasurers; and the Insignia Product Showcase.

The Continental Congress follow-up blast email was opened by 41% of the members to whom it was sent and was forwarded 14,106 times. The most popular links from the email were the Honoring Our Patriots website, the DAR Insignia Store, the President General’s Project items, the Congress Survey and the American Heritage Award Winner video.

I conclude with several links to some of the important and entertaining information presented during the week of Congress. Please share these with those who may enjoy them:
