Looking Forward to National Defense Night

Denise Doring VanBuren, President General

Can anyone NOT look forward to National Defense Night? This evening’s National Defense Night program will be moving and thought provoking, especially the keynote remarks of Lieutenant General Robert P. Ashley, Jr., Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency. It is an evening dedicated to the men and women who protect our national interests and security, and I hope that you will join us. Learn more about this evening’s ceremony here.

We will also acknowledge the DAR Service to America National Project from Home, which so many of you brought to life. Our fellow Daughters voluntarily stepped forward in a positive act of patriotism to sew and donate more than 500,000 pieces of Personal Protective Equipment during the pandemic. I am immensely proud of these women – and grateful for their generous spirit, which so beautifully captures the true meaning of membership in our giving Society.

It has been heart-warming to see so many of you tuning into the sessions that enable this unique ‘virtual’ Congress experience. I will be reporting the total participation during a live report to conclude our Congress on Sunday – let us hope to set records for involvement from members around the world. Remind others that they may join us—no registration is necessary. It’s a great way to introduce that hesitant family member to the purpose of our work – witnessing the work of our Society at Congress often hooks them!

I hope that you were inspired by the reports of our State Regents last evening. I know that I certainly was! Due to technical difficulties, Illinois State Regent, Sharla Luken’s report was cut short. Please view Mrs. Luken’s full report here: https://youtu.be/9gJ-k_BDxPk.

I also extend sincere congratulations again to our Outstanding Junior Contest winner Jacquelyn Smith! A member of the Bristol Chapter in Rhode Island, Jacquelyn Smith has served as State Regent, State Officer, Division Vice Chair, State Chair, Chapter Regent and Chapter Officer. Named Honorary State Regent of Rhode Island in 2019, Ms. Smith started the State Speakers Staff and has researched and moved the State Archives to a climate controlled facility. Ms. Smith has also paged at her State Conference and Continental Congress. She serves as a Senior Leader for the Children of the American Revolution. You can find the entire Friday evening ceremony here.

Today the Congress completes the important responsibility of voting, which will be conducted from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. ET. Delegates received voting instructions to consider adoption of the report of the Audit Committee; approval of Rise and Shine for America as the name of the President General’s Project; and election of the candidates for the Offices of Honorary Vice President General and Vice President General. Each properly registered and verified delegate was provided a unique password that enabled her to cast her ballot via the secure platform hosted by Simply Voting. Contact [email protected] if you have any issues.

Results of the voting will be presented in a live session this afternoon. Our afternoon Business Session will also feature the reports of selected National Chairs and recognition of our generous donors. Make sure to join us today at 1 p.m. ET for that Daytime Business session and tonight at 7 p.m. ET for National Defense Night on Congress Online YouTube livestream.
