The 13th Annual DAR Christmas Open House

As we approach the Christmas holidays I would love to share some photos of the 13th annual DAR Christmas Open House. This is such a fun and festive event where we welcome the public into our National Headquarters for some holiday cheer and a bit of history. This year we had a fabulous turnout of more than 1,200 people!

Headquarters is elegantly decorated for the holidays by the Property Beautification and Hospitality Committee members. The volunteers setup beautiful Christmas trees, garlands in the Library and poinsettias throughout the building. In addition, the DAR Museum decorates some of the period rooms for the holidays as well.

Visitors to the Open House have the opportunity to explore the DAR Museum, Library and Americana Room, in addition to enjoying hot cocoa and cookies and learning more about DAR. It is delightful to welcome our guests and to hear their enthusiasm about visiting our Headquarters.  Quite a few express an interest in becoming members and we are always eager to provide information about joining.

Younger visitors love meeting with Santa and putting in special requests for presents.  Each child received a Celebrate America! patriotic coloring book, a gift of the Texas Society. The children also had an opportunity to take part in a special craft with our Museum staff where they created special ornaments. The craft tied in to the "Eye on Elegance: Early Quilts of Maryland and Virginia" exhibit which many visitors were eager to see.

Guests were asked to bring children’s books to donate to Books for America and we generously received close to 500 books!

Thank you to the Property Beautification and Hospitality Committee, our Museum docents and to all our Headquarters staff for helping to put on this wonderful event. All of our guests left the Open House filled with the Holiday spirit!
