Tales from the Archives: Celebrating Women's History Month with DAR Daughters of Distinction

Tracy Robinson, DAR Director of Archives and History

March is Women’s History Month. The commemoration began in 1980 as Women’s History Week and was expanded to the full month in 1987. The purpose of Women’s History Month is to recognize women’s contributions to American culture and society throughout our history. This year’s theme is “Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to be Silenced.”

Many of you are familiar with our Dazzling Daughters list which honors accomplished DAR members, many of whom were tireless suffragists. Remarkable DAR members don’t stop there, though; our list of more than 100 women includes scientists, social reformers, artists, educators, and entertainers among many others.

To celebrate Women’s History Month this year, we would like to introduce our new and improved version of Dazzling Daughters. Now known by the more dignified title, Daughters of Distinction, the new program seeks to elevate the criteria used when considering adding a member’s name to the list. Our purpose is to recognize and honor the contributions of outstanding DAR members. By definition, a Daughter of Distinction was a DAR member who made significant and positive contributions to American or international culture, society, or history through diligent application of her unique talents and abilities. Biographies of Daughters of Distinction will be used for outreach and educational purposes including exhibits and other programs.

Please see the nomination form for eligibility, criteria, and instructions. Also see our online Daughters of Distinction exhibit to get a feel for the quality of nominations we’re looking for to expand and improve the list of honorees.

Although we regret we cannot make the Americana Room exhibits available to in-person visitors right now, we are very much looking forward to the day we can welcome DAR members and others to explore the beautiful buildings and our exhibit spaces once again. In the meantime, please be sure to visit our online exhibit offerings at www.dar.org/archives.
