Georgia State Visit

Betty Harrah, Georgia State Regent

Georgia is always on my mind! I had such a wonderful visit to the Peach state, which I consider my second home, with the lovely Georgia Daughters. The 126th State Conference of the Georgia State Society was held in Atlanta. I was accompanied by my good friend, our Chaplain General, and Georgia Daughter Virginia Lingelbach throughout the trip and we even made it down to Crawford County, Georgia for a grave marking ceremony for our shared ancestors, John and Sarah Paschall Glover. Special thank you to my pages Kathy Z. Marsh, Caroline Chapman, and Darlyn Davis, and especially State Regent Betty Harrah for your hospitality at the Georgia State Conference!

-Pamela Wright, President General

The 126th State Conference of the Georgia State Society was held March 21-24, 2024, at the Atlanta Marriott Northwest in Atlanta, with the State Theme of “Inspired to Serve and Promote Historic Preservation, Education and Patriotism.” A record 663 members and guests registered for the event. The Georgia Daughters were honored to welcome President General Pamela Edwards Rouse Wright and four visiting State Regents – Cindy Addison from Florida, Cheryl Gott from Louisiana, Renee Pace from Missouri, and Emily Robinson from Tennessee. Our visiting State Regents toured the Atlanta History Museum and experienced award-winning exhibitions, historic houses, and gardens, including the famous Cyclorama painting.

The Georgia Daughters were excited to have the Insignia Pop-Up Shop at State Conference. It was a delight to view the sparkling official DAR pins in person and meet the DAR Insignia Store Staff and Insignia Volunteers. On hand to assist members with all the different ways to support the Society’s mission were Director of Development Sandra Pollack and Tammy Clemons, Vice Chair of Development, and Vice President General. Their knowledge and guidance were greatly appreciated.

Our keynote speaker at the Friday evening banquet was Sue Verhoef, the Director of Oral History and Genealogy at the Atlanta History Center. Mrs. Verhoef presented a program on the Center’s Veterans History Project, which includes over 800 oral history interviews of veterans from World War II through the Global War on Terror. This phenomenal project allows future generations to hear first-hand accounts and better appreciate the realities of war and the sacrifices made. On Friday evening, Caitlin Greene was announced as the Georgia State Outstanding Junior.

The Georgia Daughters welcomed all five DAR School Representatives at our DAR Education Luncheon on Saturday: Kate Duncan Smith DAR School, Berry College, Crossnore Communities for Children, Hillside School, and Hindman Settlement School. The recipients of the American History Essay Contests, DAR Good Citizens, and Outstanding American History Teacher were present to accept their awards.

It was such a joy for Georgia Daughters to receive greetings from the President General and formally welcome her to the Saturday evening banquet. The Georgia State Society was jubilant to present Mrs. Wright with a donation to the President General’s Project at Memorial Continental Hall in support of Historic Preservation. During the evening, we were honored to recognize member Jean Gay of the John Benning Chapter as the 2024 Georgia Outstanding Chapter Regent. Our keynote speaker, actor Benjamin Goldman, entertained us with his portrayal of Le Marquis de Lafayette during the American Revolution. His interpretation was spot-on. With the 200th Anniversary of Lafayette’s visit to America upon us, conference attendees thoroughly enjoyed the performance. To conclude the evening, the President General participated in the DAR Leadership Training Graduation ceremony, taking photos with each graduate, and lastly, was honored to install the newly elected slate of officers for the 2024-2026 Powell Administration.

On Sunday, March 24, President General Pamela Wright and Chaplain General Virginia Lingelbach attended the grave marking of their ancestors, John and Sarah Paschall Glover, in Crawford County, Georgia. Mrs. Lingelbach explained that she and the President General often joked about being related and finally discovered they were through Revolutionary War Patriot John Glover and his wife, Sarah Paschall! Thanks were given to Sukey Hart, Mary Hammond Washington, and Nathaniel Macon Chapters for their planning and dedication of the markers. It was a memorable day for all.

The Georgia State Society is truly “Inspired to Celebrate Stars & Stripes Forever, and Rejoice in our DAR Ties of Service and Friendship!”
