Looking Forward to National Defense Night

Lynn Young, President General

I hope everyone enjoyed themselves at last evening’s Celebrate America Night! It was fun to walk around and explore all that was going on and interact with so many of you.

I also hope everyone is excited about our DNA group and how it may be able to assist in your family research! You won’t want to miss today’s afternoon business session where we will hear more from Mr. Greenspan about a new Family Tree DNA initiative.

Mary Tedesco gave such interesting remarks and it was wonderful to hear her thoughts on family history research. I always love hearing stories about how people became involved in genealogy.

Today voting begins for the Candidates for Executive Office, Honorary Vice President General and Vice President General. We will continue to hear reports of State Regents during the morning business sessions. During the afternoon session, we will recognize generous Benefactors who have donated more than $1,000 to the President General’s Project and those states which have reached 100% Participation.  Additionally, we will have a special Guardian Trust Campaign Celebration where states will present their columns, which they have used to track their state’s goals and announce their successes.

This afternoon, I am honored to attend the Junior Membership Luncheon. During the luncheon we will be celebrating Outstanding Juniors and 125 years of DAR. I am so thankful for our Junior Membership and for the amazing work they do in their communities and I look forward to seeing them in leadership roles in the future.

This evening’s National Defense Night will be very meaningful as we are celebrating the USO’s 75th anniversary and recognizing those in our military and those who support our military and veterans so selflessly every day. We have the pleasure of having many wonderful award presentations and our keynote speaker, Bob McDonald, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. During the ceremony we will learn from our GUINNESS WORLD RECORDSTM Adjudicator if we have set the new world record for “Most letters to military personnel collected in one month” and the total number of letters we have collected.

If you won’t be at Constitution Hall this evening, be sure to watch the live video stream online!

Following National Defense Night we will have the Congress Reception, where we will enjoy ice cream, live music and dancing!
