Have You Taken a Look at the Reimagined 'American Spirit' Magazine?

Lisa Melland, National Chair and Editor-in-Chief of American Spirit magazine and Daughters newsletters

Perhaps you let your subscription drop years ago or never subscribed. We encourage you to take another look! Every other month, DAR member-subscribers receive two periodicals—the American Spirit magazine and the Daughters newsletter. The American Spirit magazine is an award-winning publication that features well-written and beautifully illustrated stories of interest in a myriad of subjects. A paid subscription includes the companion Daughters newsletter designed to keep every DAR member up to date on the progress and achievements of the National Society.

Over the last year, the DAR Magazine staff and its publishing house, Hammock, Inc., have worked to refresh American Spirit magazine. Now, it is all about our treasured DAR members with at least one American Revolution-related article in every issue. The reimagined magazine also provides ideas to assist Daughters as they plan their response to important DAR initiatives like their chapter’s Day of Service. The results of the 2022 Chapter Master Report show the top five favorite subject matters from the reimagined American Spirit magazine:

  1. Historic Homes and House Museums
  2. Stars & Stripes (Patriotism)
  3. America’s Treasure (National Parks)
  4. Chapter Ideas! Ideas! Ideas!
  5. All That Sparkles with the President General

Subscribe now during the extended promotion period from July 17 – August 31, 2023!

The feedback to the reimagined American Spirit magazine has been overwhelmingly positive. Many Daughters say that they are now far more likely to read American Spirit magazine from cover to cover. I am happy to report that at the 132nd Continental Congress, we had almost double the number of new subscriptions or renewals versus the prior Continental Congress. The promotion was so successful that the President General has authorized extending the promotion from July 17th through August 31st. To subscribe during this promotion period, please click on this link to go directly to the “Subscribe” section of the DAR Magazine Committee webpage on the NSDAR website. You may alternatively call in your subscription/renewal/gift order or submit it by mail.

At Sparkle in Service Night during the 132nd Continental Congress, I had a conversation with a DAR member whose chapter gifted a magazine subscription to their local library for many years only to find out that the library was throwing away the magazine without it ever hitting the shelves. The library was going completely digital and not holding onto physical magazines. I suggested to her that her chapter’s gift subscription would be better appreciated by residents at a local assisted living residence. Most assisted living residences have libraries or common rooms where they stock magazines and books for their residents reading enjoyment. Veterans are often residents, and they appreciate the patriotic and historical subject matter in American Spirit magazine. DAR chapters often have chapter members living in assisted living residences. Won’t your chapter consider gifting a subscription to an assisted living residence(s) in your community? Please ask the manager first so the staff recognizes the magazine when it arrives and places it where residents can find and enjoy reading each issue.

There have been multiple changes made to the Chapter Achievement Awards (CAA) points system that chapters are able to accumulate through the DAR Magazine. Now, a sizeable 50 points may be scored if all your chapter’s new members by application for 2023 subscribe to the DAR Magazine! They may subscribe themselves or they may be gifted a subscription, but either way, this is an exciting new way for your chapter to help your newest members learn about the DAR, accumulate CAA points and support the publication of the DAR Magazine. Please review all the ways that your chapter may gain CAA points as there have been multiple changes made within the DAR Magazine/Newsletter under Section 6 of the Chapter Achievement Award Planning Guide.

The DAR has its very own magazine but it has been the case for years that only one in four DAR members subscribes. Now that American Spirit magazine is all about our treasured members, we hope to reach a far larger audience. In fact, we hope 80% of all current DAR members will subscribe during the Wright Administration. Please take advantage of this extended promotion to subscribe, renew or gift a DAR Magazine subscription.
