Oregon State Visit

Nancy Slagle, Oregon State Regent

I had a wonderful time visiting the Oregon Daughters for their State Conference. Oregon’s motto is ‘Alis volat propriis, which in English means ‘She flies with her own wings’. The Oregon Daughters certainly know how to fly with their own wings, and march to the beat of their own drum. From the fun lip sync contest that I was able to judge to the service project for the residents at the Oregon Veterans Home, this weekend had a little bit of everything, and truly embodied DAR’s ‘Ties of Service and Friendship’. I would like to thank Oregon State Regent Nancy Slagle for her hospitality, my Page Megan Harberts for her assistance, and Registrar General Cindy Parnell for providing my transportation this weekend. I look forward to seeing the Oregon Daughters at Congress!

-Pamela Wright, President General

On Thursday, May 16, 2024, Oregon Daughters were honored to have President General Pamela Wright join us in Hood River, Oregon for our 109th Oregon State Conference.  The conference theme was “Patriots in Petticoats” where we recognized and honored the women who participated in various ways in the struggle to gain our freedom.

We began our conference Thursday night with much fun – a rousing lip sync contest with our special guests as the judges: Mrs. Wright, Recording Secretary General Lanabeth Horgen, and South Dakota State Regent Katherine Tarrell.  It was a tough task selecting a winner, but our 81-year-old baton twirling Daughter, Patti Waitman-Ingebretson was pretty incredible.  And now I can’t get “We are Family” out of my head!  What a great time to enjoy each other’s company and to celebrate.

Friday started with Development Director Sandy Pollack hosting a lovely Heritage Club breakfast.  This was followed by our Memorial Service remembering Oregon Daughters that passed during this last year. This included Honorary State Regents Carol Ward Wilson and Janet Pierce.   The Oregon Daughters began their business meetings while Mrs. Wright and the other special guests visited the Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum. Mrs. Wright was able to take a ride in a Model T.  This is a wonderful museum which has the largest collection of still-flying antique aeroplanes and still-driving automobiles in the country.

Our Friday night Gala dinner was made even more special with our President General speaking about our organization’s strengths and our direction.  She is such a warm and caring leader.  That evening’s event included singing by our Hood River mayor, award presentation of the Ellen Hardin Walworth Medal for Patriotism to Dr. Derek Abbey for his work with Project Recover helping to bring our MIAs home, and Oregon Outstanding Teacher of American History winner, Lois MacMillan.

Saturday was a full day for our special guests who were treated to a personal tour and lunch at the historic Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood.  They really loved visiting with Heidi No. 9, a St. Bernard in a long line of lodge mascots.  The lodge was built as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt attended the dedication ceremony on September 28, 1937.  The lodge still contains the fabulous wood furnishings and wrought-iron detailing created by the artisans of that time.

Saturday included ladies working on a service project for residents of the Oregon Veterans Home in The Dalles and musical entertainment was provided by Alonzo Garbanzo.  The conference wrapped up Saturday night with a dinner dedicated to all our fabulous chapters and the accomplishments they have achieved.

The support for the State Regent’s projects was incredible.  Daughters donated musical instruments for the music therapy programs at the Oregon veterans facilities.  Also, support of the restroom replacement project at our OSSDAR Newell Pioneer Village Museum was amazing.

Overall, this was an incredible conference.  We are so thankful for Mrs. Wright’s presence, and we will never forget the friends we have newly met and those friendships we have renewed.

In peace, harmony, and unity for a better America.
