Volunteer Genealogists Are Here to Help!

Mary Lewey, National Chair, Volunteer Genealogists Committee

Are you in need of assistance? Genealogy assistance, that is. Well, you’re in luck! The Volunteer Genealogists Committee can help all members and chapters in various ways. How? Let’s run through the different levels of assistance.

First, the Volunteer Genealogists Committee helps members by producing videos that explain the reasons a Supplemental Application may have been returned. You should definitely check them out—they’re short and to the point.

Our Supplemental AIR assistance team, under the guidance of NVC Cheryl Lydyard, can help those members whose state resources were unable to solve the issue. Just fill out the form found on their webpage, and your request will be assigned to the person(s) most likely to provide the needed assistance.

Maybe you’re working on a Supplemental App and you just aren’t sure it’s quite right. You’ve had friends, family, and state resources review it and you have that nagging feeling something is missing. Fret no more! Reach out to the Supplemental Application Virtual Support Team. NVC Rachel Shaw will put you in touch with someone to give you that fifteenth set of eyes.

The Volunteer Genealogists Committee can help chapters by assigning Volunteer Genealogists to help with Applications. Sometimes the load is just too much for a chapter to handle and that’s when you need to ask for help—nobody wants to miss an opportunity to add a new member! NVC Morgan Elliott manages the national assignments helping states help their chapters.

And, lastly, for those members who have or are planning to attend Continental Congress (and I highly recommend you do if you can!) the Volunteer Genealogists Committee, under the direction of NVC Barbara Bishop, assists members in the DAR Library with our Balcony Volunteers. Such a fun way to get help on new and Supplemental Application brick walls and meet new Daughters in the process! Watch for information from your state next spring about how to sign up to help or participate.
