Learning More About Our U.S. Constitution

Denise Doring VanBuren, President General

The Constitution of the United States of America is the supreme law of our nation. It is the source of all government power and limitations, and it protects the fundamental rights of United States citizens. When was the last time you read this foundational document of our republic?

Now is the perfect time to do so, as we celebrate Constitution Week, September 17-23; this national observance was proposed and promoted by our National Society before being signed into law by President Dwight Eisenhower on August 2, 1956. Visit the Constitution Week Committee page of our members website to read more about Constitution Week and explore the resources that we have assembled to promote awareness of the document that makes our system of government the envy of the world. Looking for additional insight? Read on.

Back in February, we were pleased to host a “Constitutional Conversation” in DAR Constitution Hall with Judge Douglas H. Ginsburg of the U.S. Court of Appeals, D.C. Circuit, and host of the three-part PBS mini-series, “A More or Less Perfect Union.” It was a privilege for me to discuss the marvels of our Constitution with Judge Ginsberg, and you can view the entire conversation here.

In addition, www.izzit.org, the exclusive producer and distributor of educational materials for “A More or Less Perfect Union,” has lesson plans and other materials about the U.S. Constitution here. I encourage you to share them with teachers and students, especially at this time when parents have been thrust into home schooling. Most of these programs could also be considered for a chapter program.

The companion coffee table book to the PBS series, titled “Voices of the Republic,” explores the impact of the Constitution through the viewpoints of “75 leaders and everyday heroes,” including your President General! I am delighted to be featured in the hard-cover volume, along with such wide-ranging Americans as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Brett Kavanaugh, Ted Koppel, Ben Stein, Chuck Todd, Gen. Ann Dunwoody, Jack Nicklaus and many others. Copies of the book are available for sale through the DAR Store.

Feeling confident about your Constitutional competency? Well, the United States Semiquincentennial Commission has assembled a Constitution Quiz, a virtual educational experience to test your knowledge. The quiz, which will open on September 16 and run through October 2, is available to all age groups – so, challenge your family and friends! Learn more here: https://quiz.america250.org/.

I hope you find these resources helpful as you reflect on the United States Constitution during this month’s annual observance in honor of this foundational document of national governance. I am so very proud that DAR Members have worked for decades to raise awareness of the U.S. Constitution – join me in carrying on this important obligation in order to educate and excite future generations of citizens about the powerful governance model of our republic.
