Stay in the Know with American Spirit and Daughters Newsletter

Elizabeth Partridge, DAR Magazine Publications Coordinator

Did you hear our exciting news? Our subscribers who follow our Facebook page did! American Spirit has received two 2018 APEX Awards: We received the Magazine Writing Award for the entire January/February 2018 issue and the Feature Writing Award for the “Wreaths Across America” feature in the November/December 2017 issue. Apex Awards are based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content and the ability to achieve overall communications excellence.

Be sure you’re following American Spirit on Facebook in order to keep up with the latest issue and news from our office. Join other readers and leave a review or comment on a post. We’ve enjoyed reading them so far, and hope that you’ll continue posting. Who knows? Your ideas might inspire another reader!

For example, Sandra Rackard recently commented “Love this magazine! It’s like having a beautiful new book to read from cover to cover. The articles are so enjoyable & relevant, the pictures are beautifully colored & plentiful. I find new ideas from what other chapters are doing & expand what our chapter can do. I give a copy to all new members with the new member packet & chapter pays for the first year subscription.”

And Sallie Holsinger wrote “The American Spirit is a wonderful magazine with very interesting historical articles. I have subscribed since joining the DAR in 2012. Our Margaret Lynn Lewis Chapter gives a one-year subscription to each new member. This allows them to see the wonderful components in the magazine which will hopefully encourage them to maintain their subscription.” What great ideas from both of these chapters—a subscription to our publications is one of the best ways for members to stay informed and to become acquainted with the work of the National Society.

Speaking of subscriptions, did you know that more than 10 percent of Chapter Regents aren’t subscribers? Not only are these leaders missing out on the fantastic historical articles in our award-winning American Spirit, but they’re also missing out on news from the organization presented in the Daughters newsletter. Is your Chapter Regent a subscriber? Consider purchasing a gift subscription for her if she isn’t; it would be a wonderful way to show your appreciation for all the work she does for your chapter! Also consider gifting a subscription to your prospective members, guest speakers, local libraries, schools, senior and veterans centers, and local historical societies. Or, think outside the box and spice up the waiting areas in your local nail and hair salons, dentist and doctor’s offices. Who wouldn’t benefit from a history lesson?

To receive the November/December 2018 issue make sure you’re subscribed by September 10—this issue is sure to be another winner! We’ll be discussing not only the impact DAR had with its contributions to national expositions and fairs, but also the role DAR members played in establishing the National Society on the global stage with their relief efforts in World War I.
