Planning for the 130th Continental Congress

Denise Doring VanBuren, President General

Ever one who chooses to look upon the sunny side of life, your President General envisions that our 130th Continental Congress will not only be held in person next June but that it will be all the more fabulous because we were unable to gather in 2020. And so, the planning has begun!

Rest assured that we are including preparations that prioritize new and stringent safety protocols as we get ready to welcome you back to your home in Washington, D.C., June 30 – July 4, 2021. Here are some hightlights to help you start your own planning:

New Official DAR Conference Hotel: JW Marriott

We are excited to transition back to a familiar location as our official conference hotel: the JW Marriott at 1331 Pennsylvania Avenue. Congress pros know that we spent 10 years at the JW Marriott as our official hotel before moving to the Grand Hyatt; we are extremely excited to return to this flagship property. It is a large luxury hotel located within in walking distance of our National Headquarters that features recently updated rooms, an American style restaurant and elegant event spaces that meet our Congress needs. I am confident that the JW Marriott will again be an excellent host for our annual convention.

With the expiration of our contract with the Grand Hyatt approaching several years ago, a competitive bidding process was conducted among nearby hotels that could accommodate the needs of the DAR for Continental Congress. One of the priorities was affordability, recognizing the expense that members incur when traveling to and taking part in Congress. The JW Marriott was chosen by the National Board of Management because its offers not only a convenient location to our Headquarters building but also competitive pricing. While it is always a struggle to find affordable lodging in a large city, we hope you will agree that moving back to the JW Marriott was a prudent decision.

The 130th Continental Congress hotel reservation block will open this fall, and more information about making reservations will soon be released. Meanwhile, please learn more about JW Marriott’s “Commitment to Clean” here.

Constitution Hall Restoration Celebration – Friday, July 2

With massive restoration work ready to be unveiled in DAR Constitution Hall at the 130th Continental Congress, we plan to celebrate in grand style. A special event will serve as the grand finale of this multi-phase restoration that has been three administrations in the making. More details will be provided after the new year, but I hope you will accept my invitation to join me in celebrating everything that YOU did to ensure success of this decade-long, nearly $20 million restoration of Constitution Hall. (And don’t worry: we are planning to hold a Committee Showcase on Saturday afternoon that will replicate the traditional Service to America night that is normally held on Friday evenings at the host hotel.)

Independence Day – Sunday, July 4 – Conclusion of Congress

The Sunday of Congress falls on the Independence Day national holiday. What an exciting and appropriate way to celebrate the conclusion of the 130th Continental Congress and our love of country! I cordially invite you to consider marching as part of our official delegation down Constitution Avenue in the nation’s Independence Day Parade! We’ve taken part for nearly 20 years, and we are hoping to set a participation record with members from all 50 states joining our DAR entry in 2021. Here’s your chance to demonstrate to tens of thousands of spectators that DAR is alive, well and very much devoted to these United States of America!

Anticipating that more members will need to stay an extra night on Sunday, July 4, to celebrate America’s independence in the Nation’s Capital, we reserved extra rooms in the JW Marriott hotel block. Plan now to take part – and watch for details about how to participate in the March/April issue of the Daughters newsletter, where the Tentative 130th Continental Congress Schedule will be published.

Celebrating Independence Day as the culmination of Congress will be an astounding way to demonstrate our shared loved of country. But having July 4th fall on the last day of Congress also adds complexities to handling events that are typically conducted on Sunday. So, I ask for your patience and your forbearance as we adjust accordingly. The parade route necessitates street closures that impact our headquarters, closures that continue through the evening’s fireworks on the National Mall. We are therefore planning to spread some events held on Sunday to other days of the week or conduct them at the JW Marriott on Sunday. More information will be forthcoming about the schedule and details as soon as they are solidified. For now, let’s look forward to something new and different – and a chance to be a part of our national celebration of independence.

Finally, I am excited that some of the things that we learned from this year’s Virtual Congress will help us enhance the member experience for next year’s Congress, including improved voting procedures. I promise: it’s going to be great to be together again and to celebrate in style! Mark your calendar now to join us in Washington, D.C., for the 130th Continental Congress – we’ve got some rising and shining to do!
