Our National DAR Day of Service is a much newer event although Daughters have sought, since the beginning of our Society, to make a difference through all kinds of projects that fulfill our missions of patriotism, education and historic preservation. At the first organizational meeting in 1890, the first Resolution that was adopted pledged to support the completion of the monument to Mary Washington. From that day to this, Daughters have supported hundreds of projects, large and small, through National, state, and chapter levels. Some examples are the 12 Madonna of the Trail monuments, Valley Forge Bell Tower, DAR Manual for Citizenship, untold numbers of scholarships, JAC Chapters and DAR schools. During wartime, DAR began the DAR Hospital Corps (1898), knitted garments and had a water system installed for the town of Tilloloy, France (WWI), gave the use of our buildings to the Red Cross while millions of dollars and thousands of hours were donated (WWII), began DAR Service for Veteran-Patients (1968). This year, in response to the COVID-19 crisis, Daughters have made and donated thousands of masks for medical workers, children, Native Americans, neighbors and others.
Isaiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Dear Lord, we come before You on this 130th anniversary of the founding of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, grateful for our founder’s foresight, strength, courage, faith and persistence in establishing our special women’s organization dedicated to education, historic preservation and patriotism. We ask Your blessing as we continue the work and service they began in 1890.
In this year of pandemic, protests, politics, flooding from hurricanes, huge fires that destroy lives and property, we cry out to You for healing in so many different ways. We pray for an end to COVID-19 for our own country and the rest of the world. We are so thankful for doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers, scientists who work on treatments and vaccines. We are grateful for all the workers in essential jobs who must come to work when they are frightened. We are thankful for policemen, firemen, and our military personnel who are on the frontlines through all kinds of crises. Protect them, we pray, and give them the strength, fortitude, hope and courage to continue to serve. We pray for all the children whose lives have been radically changed and their educations disrupted.
We ask your blessing on our Nation and our leaders, touch their hearts that they put aside division and rancor and work together with wisdom and courage to begin to bring calm and healing in these troubled times. Give hope and strength to our fellow citizens who have lost family, friends, jobs and businesses through the pandemic or natural disasters. Through all these trials, Lord, we cling to Your love and promises. In Your name we pray, Amen.
