This April and May, members, friends, and family are proving that DAR stands for Daughters Are Racing with the launch of the 2023 NSDAR Junior Membership 5k! Join the Junior Membership committee, members, friends, and family in this year’s virtual event in support of the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund (HPMF). You can register online through May 31, 2023.

The 5k began in 2020 as a way to bring together members during the COVID-19 pandemic. It proved to be a popular event and, thanks to the participation of members and friends around the world, we have raised over $200,000 since its inception. We’re hoping with your participation and support we can continue to grow this event. Once registered for the event, you’re encouraged to complete the event in the form of exercise you prefer (walking, running, swimming, biking, etc.). While registration closes May 31, you may complete your 5k whenever and however you like; there is no deadline for completion. Through June 9, the registration website will facilitate self-reporting of event times, but you aren’t required to upload yours. This is a fundraiser at heart, and your registration makes many of the HPMF initiatives possible including classroom grants, support of DAR schools, and more.

As we began planning for the Wright Administration, we wanted to create a cohesive three-year theme that would not only support the goals of the Administration but also tie closely to the mission areas of our National Society. Inspired by the Wright Administration goal to ‘celebrate our nation’s rich history and diversity of experience upon the threshold of America’s 250th anniversary’ the three-year theme will focus on celebrating the contributions of women to the American Revolution. The race name, “Remember the Ladies,” comes from a line written by Abigail Adams in a letter to her husband, John Adams. As we race towards America’s 250th anniversary, we need your help to answer Abigail’s call.

Each year of the race, Junior Membership will focus on highlighting a different woman or group of women. Starting with 2023, the Juniors will highlight Polly Cooper of the Oneida Indian Nation. During the harsh winter of 1777-1778 when George Washington and his Continental Army stayed at Valley Forge, Polly provided medical aid and cooked for the soldiers. In 2024, Juniors will highlight the group of women who led the Edenton Tea Party, one of the earliest organized political activities by women in United States history. Finally, in 2025, Juniors will highlight Leonor Delgado, a Spanish American Patriot who raised and sold cattle to support Louisiana Governor Bernardo de Galvez.

To celebrate the contributions of these women and the theme, we created three pie-shaped medals that when placed together will form a circle (with an acrylic display for the medals available in the final year). Each year’s medal will feature icons representing the honorees. In addition to medals, race shirts are available as a fundraiser through Custom Ink.

This virtual 5k is a healthy and fun way for members, friends, and guests to come together and share our sparkle! We hope that the equivalent of 1% of our membership will join us in this year’s race and we need your help to get there. Challenge your chapter and DAR friends to participate! Recruit your family to register! Publicize in your community at your church, school, or fitness center! All registrants (whether DAR members or not) help us get closer to our goal. Prefer not to participate in the 5k, but still want to support the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund? You can still donate through the race registration page!
