The Iowa State Conference

It was a pleasant surprise to be met at the Iowa airport by Diana Kading, a friend who moved from Colorado a few years ago. We had a wonderful time over lunch catching up on our mutual lives. When I arrived at the hotel I was met by Nola Gottschalk, my roommate from our Vice President General days. What a warm welcome, again reinforcing my belief that the friendships we form as we serve the DAR keep us active and engaged. State Regent Cindi Carter had planned an excellent conference and I enjoyed being with her and hearing about the many accomplishments of the Iowa Daughters.

The 119th State Conference began Thursday, April 26 with the State Officers Club Dinner. The program for the evening was “The Barn Quilts of Iowa and their connection to the underground railroad.”

Friday Morning the Daughters of the Hawkeye State welcomed Mrs. Ann Dillon, President General NSDAR; Terri Mott, State Regent of Arizona; Linda Shiflett, State Regent of Mexico; Cindy McNamara, State Regent of Mississippi; Connie Plettner, State Regent of Nebraska and Mindy Davis, State Regent of West Virginia. They all added so much to our Conference. There were 23 first-time attendees.

100% Chapter participation certificates were handed out, reports given. Friday afternoon the election of the new State Officers was held. The choir practiced and Heritage Club members met for a tea and learned about projects ongoing at National Headquarters.

The Friday night Banquet honored our Good Citizen winners, it is amazing how accomplished these young people are. The All Iowa Choir sang a melody of songs from WWI and Vietnam Era. Mrs. Dillon was the keynote speaker. Her message was on the importance of service.

Saturday morning started with the Memorial Service and finishing reports. Saturday Luncheon honored our American History, Christopher Columbus, and Scholarship winners. Saturday afternoon was the installation of the State Officers. The State Regent and Vice Regent will be installed at Continental Congress in June.

As another Conference ended, we thanked Mrs. Dillon and all the visiting State Regents for making the trip to the Hawkeye State.
