DAR Service for Veterans: Wreaths Across America

Kristine Wood, National Chair, DAR Service for Veterans Committee

As chapters and members across the country are preparing for Wreaths Across America on Saturday, December 18, I sit pondering what to share with you about Wreaths Across America. I wonder why we as members and chapters participate. For many of us, it requires us to bundle up in hats, scarves and snow boots, to brave freezing temperatures to tromp through a cemetery, brrrrrrr.

I imagine many of us are driven by Calvin Coolidge’s remarks, shared in 1920 at the conclusion of World War I, “The country which forgets its defenders will itself be forgotten…we have not forgotten our defenders. We take time to shake hands, both physically and in gesture, to thank our friends who have helped defend our nation. We praise and thank those who have paved the way before us. To give to us and protect the freedom to choose, grow and work hard for our own dreams and futures. On this day we say “thank you” to all persons who have taken our country’s well-being into their hands.”  As direct descendants of American Patriots, the thought of forgetting our defenders is unconscionable. So, we as Daughters, do what we can to remember, even on a cold December morning, by honoring the men and women who wore the uniform of our nation.

National Vice Chair Brenda Kaesler provided this heartfelt response when asked why DAR and WAA have united in this mutual cause:

“The DAR mission and WAA mission closely align: HISTORIC PRESERVATION = Remember, PATRIOTISM = Honor, EDUCATION = Teach. We move forward each other’s mission/purpose. WAA is a huge supporter of DAR, they encourage us to promote DAR through our relationship with them. Because the more people we touch with our shared mission, the more this country can grow into the proud and patriotic country for which our Patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.”

In 2019 the VanBuren Administration officially endorsed Wreaths Across America. In this brief period since, we have become the largest participant nationwide. Currently one in five chapters is a sponsoring  group, totaling slightly fewer than 1,000 chapters. If your chapter is not yet a sponsoring group, National Vice chair Brenda Kaesler ([email protected])  is standing by willing to answer any questions you might have. Or you may visit the WAA webpage. This year there are over 3,100 cemeteries participating in WAA, in all 50 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, Guantanamo and the Virgin Islands. A big part of these numbers can be attributed to DAR members’ participation.  Can we count on you and your chapter to participate?

As members unite across the country in this beautiful tribute to remember and honor the men and women who sacrificed for freedom, the executive board and this national chair will be participating at Arlington National Cemetery. We invite you to view the ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery at 9:00 am ET via this link.

We invite you to view President General Mrs. Denise Doring VanBuren’s remarks at the Wreaths Across America Appreciation Dinner & Rally, Friday, December 17, 2021, 6:30 pm ET via this link.

Please help us celebrate each other’s participation in DAR Service for Veterans by sharing your pictures and experiences on the DAR Service for Veterans Facebook page. By sharing we, Rise Higher and Shine Brighter in service to God, Home and Country.
