As chapters and members across the country are preparing for Wreaths Across America on Saturday, December 18, I sit pondering what to share with you about Wreaths Across America. I wonder why we as members and chapters participate. For many of us, it requires us to bundle up in hats, scarves and snow boots, to brave freezing temperatures to tromp through a cemetery, brrrrrrr.
I imagine many of us are driven by Calvin Coolidge’s remarks, shared in 1920 at the conclusion of World War I, “The country which forgets its defenders will itself be forgotten…we have not forgotten our defenders. We take time to shake hands, both physically and in gesture, to thank our friends who have helped defend our nation. We praise and thank those who have paved the way before us. To give to us and protect the freedom to choose, grow and work hard for our own dreams and futures. On this day we say “thank you” to all persons who have taken our country’s well-being into their hands.” As direct descendants of American Patriots, the thought of forgetting our defenders is unconscionable. So, we as Daughters, do what we can to remember, even on a cold December morning, by honoring the men and women who wore the uniform of our nation.
