DAR Museum Offers Outstanding Programs

Rebecca Quam, Curator of Education Outreach

The DAR Museum education team was proud to produce a wide range of programs during the last year in order to expand not only content but also reach. Here are several examples of the innovative ways that we engaged members and the public alike in the mission of our accredited museum during 2021:

  • Tours: DAR Museum educators continued to present virtual tours to virtual attendees around the world. The education team offered some regular tours, like “Women at Home in Early America” and “When Continents Collide” early in the year, then offered specialty tours at the end of the year. These specialty tours included an updates “Secrets and Scandals” tour in October and a brand new “Warmth & Light” tour in December.
  • Lectures: The museum’s monthly Tuesday Talk series continued in its virtual format. Speakers presented information on a variety of topics, from the history of the straight pin and fashion in film to the work of other organizations and departments, like the National Museum of the American Indian and the Historian General’s Office at DAR National Headquarters. All of these lectures can be found on the museum’s YouTube channel.
  • Historical Teas: The education team offered two teas this year: In March, a suffrage tea (with special guest Madame CJ Walker!) and in December, a tea based on our new holiday exhibit, “Warmth & Light.”
  • Symposium: After its postponement in 2020, the education team finally held our annual symposium, “Designing the Gilded Age: A Symposium.” Inspired by our most recent exhibit “Illuminating Design: The Decoration and Technology of E. F. Caldwell & Co.,” speakers spoke on the influence of the Gilded Age on historic structures, lighting, and other elements of material culture.
  • Warmth & Light Experience: In its continued effort to elevate underrepresented narratives and perspectives, the museum’s education team launched a new December experience entitled “Warmth & Light: A Multi-Cultural Celebration.” This experience highlighted five cultural holidays and commemorations that are celebrated through the month of December. These celebrations represent vibrant and diverse cultural traditions and holidays often centered around warmth and light that are celebrated within the American home.

The DAR Museum education team appreciates and thanks you for your continued support and attendance at our virtual events. The museum hopes for your continued support in 2022 as we create new programming and continue our current offerings, which will be posted on the DAR Museum webpage.
