DAR Headquarters Will Shine for the Holidays

Denise Doring VanBuren, President General

While pandemic restrictions and safety concerns will keep us from staging our traditional holiday open house this year, they will not keep us from celebrating the season – and so, I am pleased to announce that we’ll be donning additional outdoor lighting in order to make the exterior of our building especially festive for 2020 – and, we are exploring virtual ways to share our Headquarters Holiday so that Daughters everywhere may be part of this year’s festivities.

DAR members, family and community friends are warmly welcomed to venture to 1776 D Street throughout December in order to enjoy thousands of lights and several new features, including dramatic first-time lighting of the Founders Memorial. Our Christmas tree on the D Street portico will be aglow with red, white and blue lights and twisted with sparkling bows, making her a must-see vision by both day and night throughout the holiday season. I express my appreciation to our Property Beautification and Hospitality Chair Shari Thorne-Sulima and her creative committee members, as well as our Headquarters Staff, for making this possible.

I know that we will all surely miss taking photos by our beautiful trees and traditional interior décor but I invite you to venture down on your own schedule to take holiday photos amidst the backdrop of our dramatic and elegant outdoor decorations. I encourage Daughters to enjoy our holiday illumination, walk around our grounds, snap a photo enjoying the lights, and then be sure to post it to Facebook for all to see. Please use the hashtag #DARHolidayIllumination when posting your DAR holiday photos to help us prepare a slideshow that we’ll post for all to enjoy.

I am especially sorry that we can’t continue our annual children’s book drive, but I’d like to encourage you to instead donate books to your local women’s shelter, community classrooms, neighborhood Little Library or other worthy organizations. I know that the pandemic will not keep our members from continuing their generous spirit and this long-running tradition of support to literacy and education.

We also plan to prepare our traditional Open House webpage on our website in order to share lots of photos and virtual ways that you will still be able enjoy the DAR Headquarters Building – wherever you find yourself celebrating.

Just as we rose to the challenge of a virtual Continental Congress, I hope that you will rise with me for a virtual holiday visit. Let’s together RISE above the current restrictions to SHINE with holiday anticipation!
