DAR Headquarters Holiday Highlights!

Denise Doring VanBuren, President General

DAR Headquarters is shining for the holiday season! We hope that our beautiful building’s sparkling Holiday Illumination will be an inspiration to brighten the darkness as we say goodbye to 2020. And I’m delighted to share that even if you can’t enjoy our decorations in person, we have virtual ways for you to take pleasure in the holiday spirit that is on full display here in Washington, D.C.

View this video message introducing our festive illumination.

Holiday Illumination

Thousands of lights now adorn our House Beautiful, including the first-time holiday lighting of the Founders Memorial. Our large Christmas tree on the D Street portico is aglow with red, white and blue lights and festooned with sparkling patriotic bows, making her a must-see vision by both day and night throughout the holiday season.

While I wish you were all able to be here at the building to celebrate the season, I hope that you will enjoy this short video as a way to virtually visit 1776 D Street.

DAR members, family and community friends are warmly welcomed to visit throughout December in order to enjoy the festive lights and exterior holiday décor at their own convenience. While you are here, I encourage you to explore our grounds, snap photos enjoying the lights and then post the photos to Facebook using the hashtag #DARHolidayIllumination. Be sure to make your post public to help us prepare a slideshow that we’ll later share for all to enjoy. And we don’t want to leave out those of you across the country – so, I encourage you to share a photo of how you and your chapter are giving back this holiday season -- “illuminating” lives in your local community.

Photos shared on Facebook using the #DARHolidayIllumination hashtag will be compiled so that we can share a slideshow of them later in the month; those who submit photos will be entered into a drawing for a gift bag of products from the DAR Store with the winners announced on December 21. So, please share your #DARHolidayIllumination photos on Facebook so we can all help to brighten the holiday spirit this year!

Virtual Joys of the Season

We’ve all learned to use virtual platforms this year in order to stay connected – and to take part events that they may never have had the chance to enjoy in the past. Here are some examples of Washington, D.C., holiday happenings that you can experience virtually from your own home.

We also, of course, have fun, virtual ways to share our Headquarters this holiday season so that Daughters everywhere may be part of this year’s festivities.

And as our special surprise – Santa has even sent us a video message to share with all of you!

Wherever the holidays find you, please don’t forget to display the real reason for the season by helping the less fortunate, remembering those who wear the uniform of our nation and counting our many blessings.  We all know that the glow of the holiday season resides inside each of us – however you celebrate the season, I think you for shining your light!
