Canceled – DAR Christmas Open House

I am so disappointed that we have had to cancel this evening’s DAR Christmas Open House. The Executive Officers and I were looking forward to welcoming all of you to our beautiful DAR Headquarters to celebrate the holiday season. Since today was declared a National Day of Mourning/Federal Holiday in honor of the passing of the 41st President of the United States, George H. W. Bush, we thought it was most appropriate to close DAR Headquarters for the day and cancel the Open House. Likewise, institutions across the nation and in Washington, D.C., including all federal buildings, are closed today.

Today we will remember and honor the life of President Bush. He exemplified unwavering commitment to his family, devoted service to our country through his military as well as his political leadership. He inspired millions to embrace community volunteerism. Barbara Bush was a faithful DAR member and we are grateful for President and Mrs. Bush’s service to our Nation.

If you were planning to join us for the DAR Christmas Open House, we invite you to visit DAR Headquarters during regular business hours to enjoy the building and museum period rooms decorated for the holidays. DAR Headquarters is free and open to the public Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. (DAR Headquarters will be closed for the holidays December 22, 24, 25, 29, 31 and January 1.)

In the spirit of the giving season, throughout the month of December we will have a box in the main lobby of DAR Headquarters to collect donated children’s books for our book drive benefiting The Oakleaf Club’s Books 4 Kids program for military families at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Any donations are greatly appreciated.

Again, I am so sorry we won’t be able to greet everyone this evening, but I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful holiday season!
