Did you hear our exciting news this past summer? DAR Magazine National Chair Jennifer Minus announced during the 126th Continental Congress that American Spirit magazine received two new APEX awards!  Our publication received the Grand Award for Feature Writing for the article “Long May She Wave: The Story of Annin Flagmakers” that appeared in the July/August 2016 American Spirit.  We also won the Award of Excellence for the March/April 2017 cover of American Spirit, which included a collage of several notable women who have been featured in previous issues of the magazine. The March/April 2017 issue was also the seventh annual issue devoted to Women’s History Month.

APEX Awards are based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content and the ability to achieve overall communications excellence. APEX Grand Awards honor the outstanding works in each main category, while APEX Awards of Excellence recognize exceptional entries in each of the individual categories.

Is your subscription up to date? Without giving too much away, the September/October 2017 issue of American Spirit is fascinating. We explore crime and punishment in the Colonial era, take a peek at the infamous New-Gate Prison in East Granby, Conn., and learn what it took to become a lawyer in the early American period. Of course, there’s always more, but you’ll have to be a subscriber to read those stories!
