Today's DAR

The DAR is a thriving women’s service organization which focuses on work in local communities to promote Historic Preservation, Education and Patriotism. There are 175,000 DAR members in 3,000 chapters located across the country and around the world. The DAR is non-profit and non-political and any woman 18 years or older who can prove lineal descent from a Patriot of the American Revolution may join, regardless of race, religion or creed.

Who is Today’s DAR?

They are women a lot like you, who come from diverse background and hold a variety of interests. Their common bond is their lineal descent from Patriots of the American Revolution.

They are women who…

  • care about fostering good citizenship
  • want to honor their ancestors
  • are devoted to educating our youth
  • want to preserve our past for future generations

Many enjoy...

  • learning about American history
  • researching genealogy
  • coordinating local community service projects
  • sharing in family DAR traditions
  • participating in commemorative events
  •

What do DAR members do?

In communities across the country and around the world chapters participate in…

  • restoring and maintaining historical sites
  • preserving genealogical records, artifacts and historical documents
  • locating, restoring and marking Revolutionary War patriot gravesites and headstones
  • supporting schools through donations and volunteer efforts
  •

How do I join the DAR?

Any woman 18 years or older who can prove lineal, bloodline descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence is eligible to join the DAR. She must provide documentation for each statement of birth, marriage and death, as well as of the Revolutionary War service of her Patriot ancestor.

DAR volunteers in chapters throughout the country can provide guidance and assistance with the application process. Admission to membership in the National Society is through a chapter or as a Member-At-Large.

Don't know where to start? Fill out a Pedigree Chart (PDF) as completely as you can and bring it with you when you meet with the chapter representative. She will be able to guide you through the application process.
